Understanding the Unique Needs of Teens and Young Adults

Adolescence and early adulthood bring a unique set of demands. For teens and young adults on the autism spectrum, navigating social expectations, building independence, and preparing for life beyond school requires specialized, individualized support, not a one-size-fits-all program.

Specialized ABA Therapy for Ages 13+

At Arizona Autism Clinic, our Teen & Young Adult ABA therapy is designed specifically for individuals ages 13 and older. Our Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) develop evidence-based, person-centered treatment plans that target the real-life skills your teen or young adult needs right now: self-advocacy, emotional regulation, community independence, personal care, and meaningful social connection.

Our Approach: 1:1 Support Built Around the Individual

We meet each individual exactly where they are, building on their strengths, addressing their challenges, and equipping them with the tools to move confidently into the next stage of life. True 1:1 therapy, consistent BCBA oversight, and active family collaboration are the foundation of every program we deliver.

What we work on

Core Focus Areas

Every teen and young adult we serve has a distinct profile. Focus areas are selected and prioritized based on each individual’s assessment, goals, and stage of development.

    Self-Advocacy & Communication

Teens and young adults need to speak up for themselves, in school, in the community, and eventually in the workplace. We build practical communication skills, including how to express needs and preferences, ask for help, and navigate conflict. For individuals using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), we continue to advance proficiency and functional use.

    Emotional Regulation & Problem-Solving

Managing frustration, anxiety, and big emotions is one of the most critical skill areas for long-term independence. Our BCBAs identify the specific triggers and behavioral patterns affecting your individual and teach structured, evidence-based coping and self-regulation strategies, so they can manage challenging situations without escalation or withdrawal.

    Independence & Daily Living Skills

From personal hygiene routines and meal preparation to managing a schedule and using public transportation safely, we target the practical daily living skills that underpin true independence. Goals are anchored in your individual’s real environment — home, school, or community — so skills transfer and stick.

    How it works

How Teen & Young Adult ABA Therapy Works at Our Clinic

Our process is structured, transparent, and built around the individual, not a generic protocol.

    1. Comprehensive Assessment & Goal Setting

A BCBA conducts a thorough, age-appropriate assessment evaluating communication, emotional regulation, social skills, daily living abilities, and independence across environments. This baseline informs a personalized treatment plan with measurable, meaningful goals relevant to the teen or young adult’s actual life, not just clinical benchmarks.

    2. Individualized ABA Treatment Plan

Based on the assessment, your BCBA builds a tailored program targeting the specific skills your teen or young adult needs to develop. Goals evolve continuously as your individual progresses, ensuring therapy remains challenging, relevant, and aligned with their trajectory toward greater independence and quality of life.

    3. Consistent True 1:1 Therapy & Ongoing BCBA Oversight

Each session pairs the individual with a dedicated Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) for focused, one-on-one support — no shared sessions, no divided attention. The overseeing BCBA monitors data closely, adjusts goals regularly, and ensures every session reflects the most current clinical priorities.

    4. Family & Caregiver Collaboration

We work closely with families throughout the entire process. Monthly parent coaching sessions with your BCBA provide transparent progress updates, practical strategies to reinforce skills at home and in the community, and a space to address evolving priorities as your teen or young adult grows. You are always an active partner in the treatment process.
